There has been rumours circulating of the possibility of ultra pro-EU Conservative Party MPs quitting and joining the newly formed ‘Independent Group’ set-up by former Labour parliamentarians.
The fledgling group was formed by seven Labour MPs in response to Labour’s Brexit policy and Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of the anti anti-Semitism crisis, which has been plaguing Labour for some time. Luciana Berger condemned the Labour Party and branded it as “institutionally anti-Semitic”. Chukka Umunna is a key figure in the new Independent Group, so it very likely they will support a second referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU.
It has been rumoured pro-EU Tory zealots such as Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston could be likely defectors to group. But reportedly pro-Brexit Conservative grassroots are against are not happy with these Europhiles. Two Remainer Tory’s faced the prospect of deselection as a result.
Sarah Wollaston MP complained about people that voted for Brexit joining the Conservative Party, moaning: “Blukip has been busy taking over the Tory Party alongside the ERG. Soon there will be nothing left at all to appeal to moderate centre ground voters.”
Wollaston also party leadership: “Tory leadership has taken zero interest in this blatant entryism & will only wake up to the reality of the ‘purple momentum’ destroying their Party when it’s too late.”
The Sun quizzed Tory MP Anna Soubry as to whether or not she was considering leaving the Conservative Party, the Euro-nationalist Liberal conservative replied: “Nothing to say. Today is about Labour and Corbyn”. Sounds like a someone jostling the prospect of defection to me.
Other possible defectors could include the likes of Philip Lee, Justine Greening and Antoinette Sandbach.
One senior Tory went on record to say that: “There’s a feeling that all six have already ‘left’.
“They speak about the Conservative Party in the third person, talking about ‘us’ and ‘them’. It’s feeling that it’s only a matter of time before they go.”
Brexit has immeasurably divided the parliamentary wing of the Conservative and Labour Party’s, the Labour has lost seven MPs to a pro-EU Independent Group and other MPs have resigned over racism within the party, the Conservatives have the pro-Brexit ERG as a party within a party to contend with alongside a possible string of defections to the new group.
