The barbaric disfigurement of young girls known as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is reportedly being performed on a growing number of infants and young children in the United Kingdom. According to the BBC.
Dr Charlotte Proudman, award winning barrister and expert in FGM, forced marriage and sex trafficking, told the BBC: “a lot of anecdotal data which shows FGM is now being performed on babies.
“These girls are not at school, they are not at nursery, and so it’s very difficult for any public authority to become aware.
“By performing it at such a young age, they’re evading the law.”
According to Quilliam there were more than 5,000 recorded cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the United Kingdom in just one year.
The author of Quilliam’s report on FGM, Muna Adil, said: “We already have the data to indicate which communities and boroughs are high-risk situations – there is no credible reason for us to be shying away from this issue.”
Labour MP for Rotherham, Sarah Champion, tweeted: “More needs to be done to prevent this barbaric practice.”
A 37-year-old Ugandan woman became the first person ever convicted of the vile practise of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the United Kingdom in 2019.
We cannot allow primitive religious and cultural practises like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to go unpunished. More action is needed from the government.
