Jens Stoltenberg the NATO General Secretary sternly advised the EU not to attempt to mimic the alliance, fresh after controversial French President demanding a “Real European Army.” to combat the supposed aggression from the United States of America amongst other nations.
Stoltenberg spoke at a conference in Berlin on Monday, he rolled out the red carpet for the prospect of greater financial commitments from individual EU states but made it perfectly clear that it “should never undermine the strength of the transatlantic bond.”
The NATO General Secretary also said: “Two World Wars and a Cold War taught us the importance of doing things together. The reality is that we need one strong and capable command structure, we can’t divide those resources in two.”
The President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump is certainty not wrong to expose the fact that only five of NATO member states currently spend the 2% GDP on defence, which includes the US and the United Kingdom.
We are reaching uncertain times when the NATO General Secretary is having to mediate between the heads of states of France and the United States over people like Emmanuel Macron calling for a “Real European Army” and Angela Merkel the Chancellor of Germany doing the same, and a jumped up French finance minister even calling for an “EU Empire.”
Perhaps France should not spend so much time dreaming of European empires and armies and more time on their own country by achieving their minimum GDP requirement on defence expenditure.
The people of Europe are certainly not out in droves calling for a real European empire or army. The European Union is becoming increasingly iron-fisted, totalitarian and uncompromising.
