Paypal have told political activist/reporter Tommy Robinson they won’t take any more payments on behalf of him.
The former leader of the English Defence League Tommy Robinson explained that Paypal had told him he wasn’t acting in accordance with their guidelines and he would no longer be allowed to use the online payment system.
Mr. Robinson had been using Paypal to fund his various legal proceedings and even claimed that the ban amounted to: “Fascism!”
Paypal stated that they would not comment on individual users but they constantly monitor customers to make sure they adhere to guidelines.
Paypal spoke rather indirectly in regards to Tommy Robinson’s ban:
“We do not take decisions like these lightly, and we work hard to be rigorous and fair-minded when reviewing PayPal accounts.
“Striking the necessary balance between upholding free expression and open dialogue and protecting principles of tolerance, diversity and respect for all people is a challenge that many companies are grappling with today.”
Tommy Robinson blasted Paypal and the establishment over the ban:
“They just don’t like my opinion and want to silence me.
“The government and establishment can see I have public support, they can see I have the ability to fight back.”
“I’ve got four staff now that need paying every month and you’ve just closed us down!”
Tommy claimed that Paypal had even frozen “a lot” of his finances that are in his account for 180 days.
I would be interested in finding out exactly what guidelines Tommy has supposedly broken? It should not be up to social media companies and online payment companies to decide who can use their platforms purely based on their political beliefs especially without any specified reasons for doing so. Shame on Paypal, who we use to process our payments online for this biased decision.
