The new and populist Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini has closed down all Italian ports a ship full of economic migrants with excess of 600 currently on-board, it would seem he is fulfilling his vow to curb illegal immigration in Italy.
Matteo Salvini declared his position on Facebook, stating; “Malta takes in nobody. France pushes people back at the border, Spain defends its frontier with weapons. From today, Italy will also start to say no to human trafficking, no to the business of illegal immigration.”
Then went on to Tweet; “Everyone in Europe is doing their own business, now Italy is also raising its head. STOP the crappy business of illegal immigration.”
The Mayor Palermo, Leoluca Orlando seems to be leading the resistance to the new Italian governments migration policies by stating that the migrant ship could dock under his jurisdiction.
Whether you like Salvini or not, he is democratically elected and fulfilling campaign promises by getting tough on illegal migration into Italy and delivering results. The political landscape is a mercurial beast at the best of times in Italy, but this is entirely different I wait with eager anticipation to see what the European Union’s response will be…
